Spirit Cultural Exchange offers yearly merit-based scholarships to exceptional young adults for the opportunity to volunteer with a variety of projects in Ecuador through Fundacion Bolivar Education, where they become immersed in the local culture. These volunteer projects are available throughout the year for a minimum length of one week and are offered in many different fields. We are excited to introduce you to one of our summer 2018 scholarship winners, Ana H.!
August 20, 2018
Ana studies Spanish and biological sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is the eldest child of immigrants. Her experiences with healthcare have driven her toward a desire to help people through many different barriers – from social to economic to cultural. This summer, she is volunteering at the Pablo Arturo Suarez hospital, a health center in the old town of Quito that provides assistance to people with limited financial resources.
With her family as her inspiration, Ana has a remarkable history of accomplishments that make her a good fit for this volunteer opportunity. Among other work, Ana is a research assistant at the Cognition of Second Language Acquisition Laboratory, a Spanish interpreter at Community Health Clinic, and the president and founder of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science at UIC.
Congratulations on your scholarship and your achievements, Ana! We look forward to reading all about your adventure in Ecuador.
