Last week, Spirit Cultural Exchange was thrilled to host a special Meet and Greet event for our J-1 Teachers in Austin, Texas and the surrounding area! The gathering brought together over thirty J-1 Teachers for an evening filled with networking, friendship, and, of course, queso! Thanks to Mama Betty’s Tex Mex Cantina, we all had a blast!
The Meet and Greet event provided a fantastic opportunity for our J-1 Teachers to connect with fellow international educators from multiple schools across the Austin area. Attendees came from a diverse array of countries, including the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, and more. The group included teachers at all levels, from elementary to high school, teaching a variety of subjects. This diversity fostered engaging conversations about teaching in the US and in their home countries, making for an enriching exchange of experiences.
Many attendees expressed how exciting and valuable it was to meet other J-1 Teachers navigating similar challenges and triumphs as international educators. Some had just begun their J-1 Teacher Program a month ago, while others were nearing the end of their program. The opportunity to share advice on both living and teaching in the Austin area was undoubtedly beneficial. The casual and welcoming atmosphere of Mama Betty’s Tex Mex Cantina allowed for meaningful discussions, professional networking, and insights about life in Texas.
Spirit Cultural Exchange staff members Katie M. and Suzanne were present throughout the evening to offer support, answer questions, and hear firsthand about the experiences of our J-1 Teachers. From sharing classroom successes to discussing concerns, the event strengthened the sense of community among our teachers. After months of phone calls and emails, it was refreshing to meet our participants in person and build even stronger connections.
The event was filled with wonderful moments, and we captured plenty of photos showcasing the enthusiasm and friendship among our J-1 Teachers in Austin. Seeing so many dedicated educators come together to form friendships and share their journeys was truly inspiring. From group discussions to one-on-one conversations, the event reinforced the shared commitment to education and cultural exchange. Teachers bonded over their experiences, sharing tips on classroom management, adapting to the US school system, and embracing the cultural diversity of their students.

The Meet and Greet was part of a broader visit to Austin by Spirit staff members Suzanne and Katie M, who were also in town to connect with Host Schools and current J-1 Teachers in Austin. For those who couldn’t attend the event, we tried to visit them at their Host Schools. These school visits were an incredible experience, allowing us to see firsthand how different teachers decorate their classrooms, engage with their students, and express their school pride. Each visit provided a unique glimpse into the daily lives of our J-1 Teachers and the positive impact they are making in their schools.
We were thrilled to witness so much support from each Host School. Host School communities have a crucial role in making the transition to a US classroom as smooth as possible for our J-1 Teachers.
Events like these are a special way to interact with our J-1 Teachers in Austin. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, with many teachers expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to network and build lasting friendships.
