This month, Spirit staff members Colleen and Grace accompanied 21 exchange participants from Mongolia, Turkey, Jamaica, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, and Kazakhstan on a daytrip to Madison, Wisconsin. Special guests included Rich Baader, CEO of Spirit, Mark Hilbert from the US Department of State, and Tawsif Anam, Regional Director for Senator Ron Johnson’s office.
Our journey began with a visit to the majestic Wisconsin State Capitol building. Nestled in Madison’s heart, participants marveled at its stunning architecture and snapped countless photos. Curiosity sparked conversations about Wisconsin’s rich history, particularly about the state’s symbol, the Badger.
Following the tour, Tawsif Anam, himself an immigrant from Bangladesh, shared his insights with our group. His perspective resonated deeply as he discussed the cultural exchange experience and the significance of learning about American Healthcare System. Mark Hilbert from the Department of State also spent the day with us, engaging with participants and adding to the richness of our discussions.
Next, we explored the sprawling campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Towering lecture halls and bustling residence buildings left our participants in awe. They engaged with current UWM students, gaining firsthand insights into campus life and residence hall culture.
We concluded our day at the iconic Memorial Union, overlooking the serene Lake Mendota. Participants soaked in the sunshine on the Terrace, enjoying lunch and fostering new friendships. The atmosphere was vibrant with laughter, as participants exchanged phone numbers and eagerly shared photos of their memorable day.
The trip to Madison was not only educational but also a celebration of cultural exchange. It was heartwarming to witness participants from diverse backgrounds coming together, discovering shared interests, and creating lasting connections highlighting how the BridgeUSA Summer Work and Travel Program fosters international cooperation and understanding.
