Meet Manuela, a BridgeUSA Work and Travel alumna from Colombia whose experiences have not only given her a global perspective but have also shaped her career in International Relations. Manuela participated in the Work and Travel program in the Wisconsin Dells during the summers of 2021 and 2022.
Last month, Manuela had the privilege of meeting with representatives from the US Department of State to discuss important topics.
Engaging with the Department of State
At the Centro Colombo Americano in Bogotá, Manuela, along with other program alumni, engaged in dialogues on youth mobility opportunities, the importance of bilingual education, and the execution of bilateral projects with the US government.
Reflecting on the event, Manuela shared her excitement,
“It was an honor to share my personal experiences and to hear from distinguished members of the Department of State. Rebecca Pasini and David Benze, along with other collaborators, were amazing and provided us with a platform to further these important discussions.”
Insights from the Event
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Private Sector Exchange Rebecca Pasini, a key speaker at the event, captivated the audience with her extensive experience in the field. She began by sharing her academic journey, detailing how her own participation in exchange programs significantly impacted her career. Her stories resonated with many attendees, illustrating the power of such opportunities.
Alongside Pasini, David Benze and other Department of State officers contributed to the discussions. The collective input from these distinguished individuals made the event memorable and informative.
A Work and Travel Alumna’s Transformative Experience in the United States
Manuela’s time in the United States was a cornerstone in her career development. Studying International Affairs, she found that her cultural exchange experience provided invaluable insights. “The [cultural exchange experience] I lived was a huge extra when I was going through that academic field,” she noted. Immersing herself in diverse cultures, languages, and histories not only enriched her understanding but also inspired her thesis on youth mobility in the context of the Work and Travel program.
Her experience underscored the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. By interacting with people from various backgrounds, she gained a comprehensive view of International Affairs that textbooks alone couldn’t provide.
Advice for Aspiring BridgeUSA Participants
Manuela’s advice to those considering the BridgeUSA Work and Travel Program is encouraging:
“Take the risk. It is one of the biggest achievements you will have in your life. You will feel uncomfortable, you will learn, you will go through an accommodation process, and then you will be happy for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.”
The journey of adapting to new environments, learning from diverse cultures, and gaining professional experiences abroad is invaluable. Manuela’s story is a testament to the impact of the BridgeUSA Work and Travel Program, offering young individuals a unique opportunity to grow personally and professionally.
